East Feliciana Parish deer green scores 181 inches Boone & Crockett.
Ron Anderson and the buddy with whom he shares hunting rights on a couple of hundred acres in East Feliciana Parish weren’t happy with how the season was unfolding.
“We had talked about how disappointed we were this season because we hadn’t had any trophy deer show up,” Anderson said.
So he was surprised when a buck that has been green scored at more than 180 inches stepped out yesterday afternoon (Dec. 28).
Anderson had been at the camp near Ethel since Christmas, spending time with his nephew Anderson Sirmon.
“We had been moving around because I had been seeing some management bucks, and wanted to let Anderson shoot one,” Anderson said.
The 11-year-old is from Destrehan, and hasn’t done much deer hunting. So the goal was to let the youngster pop a buck.
As they sat in the stand overlooking a food plot that covered a couple of acres of the property, Anderson expected deer to come out directly in front of him. That’s the pattern that had been set by the does during recent hunts.
But movement caught his eye to the left about 5:30 p.m., and when he glanced over a doe had walked out at about 75 to 80 yards.
Anderson pointed it out to Sirmon, and then noticed a deer following the doe.
“He was with the doe, coming to the food plot,” Anderson said.
A quick glance sent his adrenal gland into action, so Anderson grabbed his binoculars and glassed the deer. Briefly.
“As soon as I put the binoculars on him, I could just see his right side,” Anderson said. “I saw four points on the right side, and then I concentrated on getting a shot on the deer.”
Honestly, he really didn’t know how big it was.
“I knew he had horns and was a shooter,” Anderson said.
So he turned to young Sirmon and offered him the chance to take the shot.
“I asked him, ‘Do you want to shoot him?, and he said, ‘No, I’m afraid I’ll miss,’” Anderson said.
So the elder hunter put his rifle to shoulder and squeezed the trigger.
The buck streaked off, and the pair of hunters sat a bit to allow the deer time to die. When they climbed out of the stand, Sirmon ran to lead the search.
“He found the blood trail and found the deer,” Anderson said.
The buck had run into an adjacent pasture before piling up, and Anderson heard his nephew hooting with joy before he even got close.
“He yelled, ‘He’s huge; he’s huge!’” Anderson said. “He was screaming.”
When the 37-year-old hunter reached the downed buck, he found out why Sirmon was so excited. The first thing he did was call his father Ronnie to tell describe the buck.
Massive antlers sprouted from the buck’s head, with 11 mainframe points arrayed around long main beams originating from 5 ½-inch bases. Each G2 featured a kicker, and there were a couple of other points that could be included in the final score.

Buddy Chris Evans, who arrowed a potential state-record typical buck earlier this season only a couple of miles from Anderson’s lease, put a tape to the rack and came up with 181 inches Boone & Crockett.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to see a deer that big,” Anderson said. “I had to go out to check the freezer (today) to make sure it was till there.”
