2012 turkey hunting regulations proposed by LWFC

Proposal

Turkey hunting season dates and regulations for 2012 were proposed yesterday (July 7) during the monthly meeting of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials recommended the state be divided into two zones in order to address public demands for a later opening date in North Louisiana.

If approved, turkey hunting season will open on March 24 in the south zone and March 31 in the north zone.

Season closures will be staggered in each zone. In the south zone, Area A would extend to April 22, Area B to April 15, and Area C to April 8.

In the north zone, Area D would extend to April 29, Area E to April 22, and Area F to April 15.

Private-land youth hunts for those 17 years of age and younger, and hunts for wheelchair-confined hunters are proposed to take place on March 17-18 in the south zone and March 24-25 in the north zone.

Daily bag limit remains at one gobbler under the proposal, while the season limit would be two gobblers.

The proposal also includes turkey season dates for LDWF Wildlife Management Areas and special lottery hunts.
