St. Mary giant takes Louisiana Sportsman big-buck contest

Missouri buck wins out-of-state category

The swamps of St. Mary Parish aren’t exactly thought of as big-buck terrain, but you’ll never be able to convince Kevin Breaux of that.

The Franklin cane farmer dropped a 14-point monster on Jan. 14, and parlayed the big kill into a $1,000 check at Louisiana Sportsman magazine’s big-buck contest at the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show.

The deer netted 175 1/8 Boone and Crockett points as a typical to take the contest’s Best In-State category. Because the rack had not had a full 60 days to dry, the score is unofficial.

Brent Barker took the $500 prize in the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show Big Buck Contest with his 144-inch Missouri buck.

See a video of Breaux telling about how he killed the monster swamp buck in the Big Buck Contest video gallery.

The contest was open to all deer legally killed during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

The Best Out-of-State buck category was won by Brent Barker, who killed a beautifully symmetrical racked buck on Nov. 14 in Clark County, Mo. The deer scored 144 B&C points, and netted Barker the $500 first-place check.

Taking the Youth category was Cory Coreil, who took a whopper 19-point on Nov. 26 in West Feliciana Parish. The big buck scored 166 points B&C non-typical.

Cory took home an Ol’ Man climbing deer stand donated by Bowie Outfitters and a Bushnell trail camera.

All non-winning entrants were included in a random drawing for a Summit two-man ladder stand (donated by Bowie Outfitters) and a Bushnell range finder. That prize package was won by Eugene Brady of LaPlace, who entered a St. John Parish monster that scored 142 2/8 typical.

There were no entries in the Bow/Muzzleloader category.
