Fishing closures move into Louisiana Marshes, edge toward Lake Borgne

Strong winds and higher-than-normal tides associated with Hurricane Alex, along with the proximity of oil, have resulted in the immediate closure of all fishing in more waters in northern St. Bernard Parish, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported this afternoon (July 2).

Now closed are the portion of state waters in north of 29 degrees 47 minutes 00 seconds north latitude from the double-rig line in Breton and Chandeleur sounds westward to 89 degrees 25 minutes 00 seconds west longitude.

This latest action closes all waters west of Half Moon Island at the mouth of Lake Borgne and basically north of Bay Eloi (a small portion of the bay is actually included in the closure) at the mouth of Bayou La Loutre.

Closed waters include Christmas Camp Lake, Drum Bay, the western end of Lake Eugenie, Lawson and Treasure bays, all of Indian Mound Bay, most of Bay Boudreau and all of the marshes included in this area.

All other fishing closures remain in effect.
