The U.S. Coast Guard is planning to set a portion of the crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico from the downed Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded and sank last week, the Associated Press is reporting.

The plan is the part of the effort to prevent the oil, which is still leaking from the undersea oil well at an estimated rate of 42,000 gallons daily, from reaching the Louisiana marshes.
Remote submarines have failed in several attempts to plug the well, and the Deepwater Horizon operator has said it plans to drill a relief well to redirect the flow of crude oil from the deposit. Drilling on the alternative well could begin as early as tomorrow.
