On Monday (April 12)evening I wanted to see if I could roost some birds. I brought my wife along. So at 7:15 p.m., we were sitting in a blown-down tree glassing the fields. Soon we could see two birds heading our way. We watched them fly up to a dead pine.
So this morning (April 13) I was very excited. I grabbed my gun and boots and headed to the woods.
Apparently, I was to tired or in too much of a hurry because I soon realized I had only grabbed one boot. So I kept my brown shoes on and headed to my spot.
I was set up 200 yards from where they were roosted. A rooster crowed, and the turkey sounded off.
He continued gobbling until 6:30 a.m. I did a flydown cackle and he triple gobbled.
I was fired up!
At 7 a.m., he flew down and headed my way. The other soon followed.
It was amazing to watch them run across the field and then strut. They put on a great show, but I had to end it with a No. 5 Remington nitro mag upside his head.
He had an 11-inch beard, 1 1/8 spurs and weighed 26 pounds. He is my biggest bird so far.
I was telling a taxidermy friend about my bird. He proceeded to tell me I might have a state-record bird.
We put information in the turkey calcuator and came up with a score of 69.875. The Louisiana state rRecord is 54.50.
My bird beat it by 15.375!
I had no idea what I had. I did not have enough money to mount it, So I skint it! I have the state-record turkey breast sitting in my fridge.
Wonder what state-record bird taste like???? Chicken???
