Capt. Paul’s Edge program for the Rigolets

According to Wikipedia, the Rigolets is an east-west 8-mile long strait connecting the northern part of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne. “Rigolets” comes from the word rigole, which is French for “trench” or “gutter.” The name is locally pronounced “RIG-uh-leez.”

But it’s more than a trench, as the water in some places is nearly 100 feet deep, and at one location is about 4,600 feet wide. The entire length of this “gutter” is marked with NOAA Aids to Navigation consisting of lights, markers, buoys, cans, and nuns. It is a major artery for getting to and from Lake Pontchartrain, and the east end intersects the Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi Sound waterway.

This Edge features more than 180 waypoint locations, including Four Bayou shown as waypoint RG 177 at the north side of the Rigolets at 30°10.5080’ N Latitude ~ 89°40.5846’ W Longitude

It also contains many Lake Pontchartrain locations, such as the Old Brick Hospital Wall shown as Waypoint RG159 at 30°09.9046’ W Latitude ~ 89°44.9387’ W Longitude, and some around the Chef Pass shown as waypoint RG27 at 30°06.0599’N Latitude ~ 89°48.9030’ W Longitude.

There are many locations in the area just east of Lake St. Catherine, such as waypoint RG 88A at Counterfeit Pass and Bayou Bay Jaune at 30°09.3162’ N Latitude ~ 89°41.1007’ W Longitude.

It features many locations around the ICWW, such as waypoint RG56 at Miller Bayou at the railroad bridge at 30°07.2084’ N Latitude ~ 89°41.8594’W Longitude, and the hole at Unknown Pass at Lake Borgne shown as waypoint RG90 at 30°06.3572’N Latitude ~ 89°40.8194’ W Longitude. And it features additional locations in the lower reaches of the West Pearl and Pearl Rivers.

I call the programs “Capt. Paul’s Fishing Edge” because I believe they will give the angler an advantage in getting to, finding fishing spots, moving around, and getting back from some of the premier fishing areas in the state.

Presently, Capt. Paul’s Edge is available for 21 different areas, including Barataria Bay, Lake Borgne, Hopedale to the Miss Sound, Hopedale to Bayou Terre Boeufs, Delacroix to Point a la Hache, Bayou Bienvenue, Port Sulphur, Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne, Calcasieu Lake, Pearl River WMA, Lafitte, Leeville East and Leeville West, Vermilion Bay, Empire-Buras, Myrtle Grove, Cocodrie/Dulac, Bayou Sauvage NWR, Big Branch NWR and the Rigolets, which is highlighted in this column.

Each of the Edge programs have more than 100 of my fishing and navigation waypoints, and they’re written in most of the common formats needed for consumer GPS units.

Edge Waypoints can be electronically installed

Each file can be downloaded into a variety of GPS units. All of the EDGE programs are sent as an email attachment to your computer address. This data download enters all of Capt. Paul’s Waypoints into the unit, and each download also features a general map of the area in 1:100,000 scale, as well as individual information on each waypoint.

These map images cannot be installed in the GPS unit, but offer a location of the waypoints and their descriptions, as well as a READ ME and INSTRUCTIONS file.

To order an Edge file, you must have an email address that accepts attachments. All of the Capt. Paul’s Fishing Edge  files can be found in Louisiana Sportsman’ s Outdoor Store (www.sportsmangear.com).

In addition, there are several link buttons throughout LouisianaSportsman.com which will bring you to the EDGE ordering page.

Remember that you must state your brand of GPS unit, your email address and the selected area. The Edge files are NOT brand name interchangeable — so be sure to make the correct GPS selection.
