Body of missing boater recovered Friday in Bayou Bienvenue

Victim fell overboard while fishing near Chalmette on Oct. 26, LDWF says

Search and rescue crews late Friday afternoon recovered the body of a Zachary man who reportedly fell overboard while fishing in Bayou Bienvenue near Chalmette on Oct. 26.

According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the body of Haskin Payne, 44, was recovered about 6 p.m. in the area where he had fallen out of his 24-foot boat while fishing with his wife Thursday afternoon.

Payne’s wife told authorities they were fishing when her husband slipped and fell into the water. She jumped in and unsuccessfully tried to get him back in the boat, and was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans where she was treated for hypothermia.

Payne and his wife were not wearing life jackets when the accident occurred, according to the press release.
