Ultralight rods and reels are a staple for crappie fishermen across the country. However, Jeff Bruhl takes a slightly different approach — particularly when throwing Road Runners.
“I use a 6-foot, 9-inch medium-light Abu Garcia Veritas spinning rod,” Bruhl said. “I don’t like to use the ultralight stuff because it’s hard to get the hook into them.”
He also uses the slightly heavier rod to more effectively present his Road Runner.
“It’s easier to skip with a little bit stiffer pole,” Bruhl said. “You want something light-action, but still a little bit of backbone to it.”
Bruhl spools his reels with 6-pound-test Berkeley 100% Flurocarbon.
When fishing corks for crappie, he switches to 8-foot jig poles spooled with 6-pound Trilene Maxx monofilament.
“You want something a little bit tougher,” Brul said of his cork rig. “When you get hung up with those corks, you want to be able to straighten the hook out and get your rig back if you have to.”
