Cut Off hunter downs 13-point Mississippi brute

Gisclair’s big buck grossed 167 inches

As the old saying goes, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try – try – try again.’

That pretty much summed up a weekend’s worth of hunts earlier this month for Monica Gisclair in Claiborne County, Miss., where the Cut Off resident eventually arrowed a monster 13-pointer that grossed 167 inches.

A clean miss on Saturday, a decision to let a close-in buck walk on Sunday — followed shortly thereafter by spooking a third buck when she took the safety off her crossbow — had her wondering if she’d ever connect.

That’s when the massive 13-pointer that nobody at the camp even knew existed came walking down the logging trail, eventually in range of Gisclair’s ground blind.

“Heck yeah I was nervous; my heart was pounding, and the blood was rushing through my body,” she said. “I tried to settle down and I finally told myself, ‘I’ll just try and shoot.’
