Getting Goosed
Snows and blues are very social creatures, and they communicate effectively. If one member of a group of alighting birds sees anything out of the ordinary, the entire flock will fly away. A near perfect day for goose hunting was seemingly in store for us as we watched the Johnson grass buck in the stiff northerly wind. We were following the truck of one of Clint Matthew's guides through the vast fields of long-ago harvested rice fields, almost tailgating so as not to lose him on the unfamiliar highways of the area around Kaplan.
Goose Gear
Goose guide Clint Matthew uses a mix of decoys that includes G&H full-body decoys because he feels they have the best detail. I cannot count how many times I have traveled the back roads through Rayne, Crowley, Kaplan and Gueydan and points in between on my way to Pecan Island. Sometimes the truck seems to drive itself as my mind leaves the world behind and dreams lie before me in the form of a cane-lined duck blind with cupping mallards above me.
2005 Duck Forecast
Louisiana hunters are hoping for the type of productive opener that has eluded them in recent years.
Monday, Nov. 7 — The jet stream, that great river of air that drives the continent’s weather, stretches in a mildly undulating line from Oregon to Maine, pushing storms and weather fronts from west to east across North America.
