Duck season ends strong for most, despite continued drought
While hunters up north had to fight to end the duck season on a positive note, those along the Louisiana coast had a strong finish. Following a heralded first split, Louisiana duck hunters had high hopes for the second portion of the 2011-2012 waterfowl season. Despite weather that was largely devoid of frost, most hunters were not disappointed with plenty of birds taken right to the closing bell.

Though lack of water still hurt some, many drought-stricken hunters were able to salvage the season following rainfall in late December and January.
Youth waterfowl duck hunting allowed on Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge beginning Sept. 10
Bayou Sauvage NWR will allow waterfowl hunting for youth only for the first time beginning Saturday. Portions of Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge will open for the first time to youth waterfowl hunting beginning Saturday (Sept. 10), allowing young hunters to take advantage of the early teal season.

This is the first hunting season opened on the refuge since its establishment in 1990, and youth hunting will be allowed throughout the rest of the teal season and the regular duck season on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Davis Island yields 170-class 9-point
Harvey Guillot watched this massive 9-point chasing does, and shot the deer while it rested from the rutting exertion. It has been scored at almost 180 inches. With his week of vacation coming agonizingly to a close on Dec. 30, Harvey Guillot cashed in on a magnificent 9-point buck at the last minute on his Rosedale Hunting Club on Davis Island, and it did it in an unconventional way.

A little while later, the duck hunters opened up. I counted close to 100 shots before 7 a.m.

Suddenly a nice 8-point buck comes flying into the field I was overlooking. No doubt it was pushed... READ MORE

Department proposes either-sex deer tag, other hunting changes
Youth hunters like John David Roberson, 10, of Monroe, could see more options available to them next season. John shot this 185-pound deer in Tensas Parish on Nov. 19, 2011. The 9-point had a 13-inch inside spread with 18-inch main beams. If the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has its way, hunters across all of the state will see some type of alteration to their regulations for the 2012-13 season. Most significantly, the department would like to change the makeup of the six tags it issues to deer hunters.

Franklin Parish man cited for illegally killing trophy deer, entering big-buck contests
A Winnsboro man was cited Thursday (Jan. 19) for allegedly killing a 15-point deer with an illegal weapon and entering it into several North Louisiana big-buck contests, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported today.

LDWF agents cited Billy W. Jordan, 54, of Winnsboro for taking a deer with an illegal weapon and four felony counts of contest fraud, the agency reported.

Father, son rescued after boat capsizes during duck hunting accident
A father and son were rescued from Duck Lake in St. Martin Parish yesterday morning (Dec. 27) after the pair’s boat capsized during a duck-hunting trip, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Russ Tircuit, 58, and his 25-year-old son Michael Tircuit, both of Addis, were rescued from the water about 8:35 a.m. by St. Mary Sheriff’s Office deputies and transported to the Franklin Foundation Hospital for hypothermia treatment, the LDWF said.
