Annual drawdown at Catahoula Lake underway one month early, LDWF says
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is starting the annual drawdown of Catahoula Lake about a month earlier than normal to attempt to control the encroachment of woody vegetation and enhance production of plants beneficial to waterfowl.

The annual drawdown of Catahoula Lake has begun about one month early this year in an attempt by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to address the encroachment of woody vegetation on the lakebed, according to a news release.

Duck breeding ground conditions excellent now in southern Saskatchewan, Reynolds says
Several pairs of ducks can be seen in this photo taken by Larry Reynolds during his recent trip to southern Saskatchewan to monitor Ducks Unlimited wetlands restoration projects.

On a recent auditing trip to monitor Ducks Unlimited’s efforts to restore wetlands in Saskatchewan, Louisiana’s waterfowl study leader was encouraged by both the number of birds and the habitat conditions he witnessed firsthand.

Taking down hogs — airboat style
Tune in to Sportsman TV tonight at 6:30 on Cox Sports Television for 'Airboat Hog Hunt,' which documents a recent trip to St. Bernard Parish to hunt feral hogs in the marsh.

In what Greg Hackney likened to “a carnival ride with a shotgun,” the Sportsman TV host recently traveled to Violet for an airboat hunt to take down some feral hogs in the marsh.

Excitement builds as countdown to deer season begins

Snap Shot Shotgun Sight is sure to help keep you on target
The Snap Shot Shotgun Sight will put more game on the ground when you send lead (or steel) through the air.
The Snap Shot Shotgun Sight from EZ Access Gear might look a little unusual until you’re looking down the barrel – then everything comes into focus.

The SSSS has one purpose: to provide instant and correct target acquisition so every shot counts and the game goes home with you.

While there is no magnification, the Snap Shot makes you a better shot. To see through the Snap Shot opening, a shooter must have his head down on the barrel and the gun up in proper shooting position. The expert hunters at EZ Access say if your target is in the circle, the game will wind up on the ground.

Federal duck stamps available online, from state license vendors starting Aug. 1
Starting Aug. 1, Louisiana's waterfowlers can purchase federal duck-hunting stamps online or from state license vendors.

Louisiana duck hunters will be allowed to purchase federal waterfowl stamps online and through hunting-and-fishing license vendors throughout the state beginning Aug. 1, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said today.

Video: When wild hogs attack
When a hog attacks, the result is often a trip to the hospital to get stitched up.

Hunting is often described by the uninitiated as an act perpetrated on innocent animals. And, well, we do hide in trees and wait for deer to meander into our sights. Fun and productive, but it's not all that dangerous to the hunter, unless he happens to fall from his perch.

And then there's hog hunting. Unless you are lucky enough to be in a tree when a hog walks out, you just never know what will happen — as this video so aptly shows.

LWFC adopts NOI for aerial feral hog control
In this photo provided by Vertex Aviation Group, a gunner takes aim at a group of wild hogs in Texas.

Citing the growth of the feral hog population and the corresponding damage they create, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission adopted a notice of intent last week that would establish permit regulations for aerial hog control.
