Playing the wind yields East Baton Rouge Parish giant
Slaughter's James Phelps eased up on a group of does feeding in a field and caught this 160-class 18-point slipping into the green patch while deer hunting in East Baton Rouge Parish on Dec. 19. The vast majority of deer hunters in Louisiana look for their quarry from the vantage point of elevated stands. Many also utilize trail cameras to give them an idea of what they’re hunting.

Slaughter resident James Phelps, 27, relies on neither: He does most of his hunting from the ground and doesn’t use trail cameras. That strategy paid off Dec. when Phelps popped a big-bodied, massive-racked 18 point buck that should score in the 160-inch range.
Father, son rescued after boat capsizes during duck hunting accident
A father and son were rescued from Duck Lake in St. Martin Parish yesterday morning (Dec. 27) after the pair’s boat capsized during a duck-hunting trip, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Russ Tircuit, 58, and his 25-year-old son Michael Tircuit, both of Addis, were rescued from the water about 8:35 a.m. by St. Mary Sheriff’s Office deputies and transported to the Franklin Foundation Hospital for hypothermia treatment, the LDWF said.

Data show flooding had little impact on Atchafalaya Delta deer herd

The deer-per-hunter effort was very good for a bow-only refuge.

Citations issued for illegal deer hunting
Ten people recently were cited in Webster and Bienville parishes for alleged illegal deer hunting, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

The citations came after LDWF enforcement agents received tips about night hunting, the agency said.
Department proposes either-sex deer tag, other hunting changes
Youth hunters like John David Roberson, 10, of Monroe, could see more options available to them next season. John shot this 185-pound deer in Tensas Parish on Nov. 19, 2011. The 9-point had a 13-inch inside spread with 18-inch main beams. If the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has its way, hunters across all of the state will see some type of alteration to their regulations for the 2012-13 season. Most significantly, the department would like to change the makeup of the six tags it issues to deer hunters.
